The most economical path to Gemini AI

Google Pixel 8a

The Pixel 8a is still the cheapest way to access all of Google’s AI products.

The Google Pixel 8a may look like a Pixel 8 clone — and in many ways, it is! But it’s also the cheapest starting price for Google Gemini’s AI-powered features like Circle to Search. For those who want to use it on a budget, the Pixel 8a is the best option.

Google’s Pixel version has a familiar feel to it.I bought it Pixel 8 October, but Pixel 8a feel like Nothing more than a repeat, in addition to the camera hardware and a few other bits. This illustrates Google’s somewhat confusing trajectory in hardware. As someone who has bought a first-line flagship Pixel twice, I’m annoyed that I only got an upgraded camera system that starts at $200.

The Pixel 8a has almost all the features of its flagship counterpart. It’s powered by the Google Tensor G3 CPU (the same as the Pixel 8/8 Pro), has wireless charging and face unlock, and has the same size Actua display. It also offers excellent battery life, something the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro still struggle to cope with seven months after launch. This all starts at $500.

To be fair, Pixel 8a is not a replica of Pixel 8. I prefer the 8a finish because it’s less likely to slip off the table. The buttons on the Pixel 8a are also more visible than on the Pixel 8; they even offer a satisfying click sound.

The Pixel 8a’s 6.1-inch Actua display is the same size as the Pixel 8 and has a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate — it doesn’t update at 120Hz all the time, which is probably why Google can claim long battery life. Interestingly, Google opted for a glass display on the Pixel 8a instead of the P-OLED display on the Pixel 8/8 Pro. On paper, the Pixel 8a weighs only a few grams apart, at 6.6 ounces versus 6.8 ounces. But in the hand, the all-glass body has obvious weight.

This generation of Pixel 8a comes in four colors: Porcelain, Obsidian, Bay (the same blue as the Pixel 8 Pro), and Aloe (a stunning, saturated teal with a hint of mint in the swatch). It’s beautiful and the tone of the photographic headline on the back matches it. The bottom of the Pixel 8a features stereo speakers and a USB-C charging port.

The Pixel 8a is equipped with a Tensor G3 processor and 8GB of RAM, which is the same configuration as the Pixel 8 I traded online. Pixel 7 for. Tensor G3 allows Pixel 8a to use the following features Circle search. Keep in mind that Google’s plan for its devices is to help spread its artificial intelligence products and services. The emphasis on performance in the chip inside the Pixel 8a isn’t necessarily about gaming, multitasking, or longevity; It’s about providing a stable platform for Gemini AI and everything it claims to do.

Unfortunately, Geekbench 6 isn’t available for download on most pre-release hardware. I won’t run an unverified APK for testing purposes, so I’ll have to wait a while before running it through some of the more popular synthetic benchmarks. But so far, I can say that the Pixel 8a passes the simulation and occasionally runs Pokemon Go.It even works with Razer Kishi Ultra.

This time around, the Pixel 8a offers more storage space. It comes with 128GB or 256GB of file and photo space, but can only be pre-ordered in Obsidian color from the Google Store. If you are looking to buy a fully functional smartphone, this smartphone is not the best option for you, especially at the budget price. My Pixel 8 has 256GB of RAM and I have to constantly clear space.

So far, the Pixel 8a’s battery life is promising. But that’s no surprise, as the past two generations have dominated our list of the best mid-range battery products. It took the device two days of standby time to drain 40% of its battery life, although that’s not an official figure for the device as an everyday powerhouse. I still need to run the official Gizmodo battery consumption benchmark, and will do so after I return from Google I/O 2024.

Pixel 8a camera

Same camera as Pixel 7a

The Pixel 8a has the same camera system as the Pixel 7a: a 64-MP wide-angle lens with an 80-degree field of view (FoV) and f/1.89 aperture, and a 120-degree field of view. The front camera is the same too: a 13 MP sensor with a 96.5-degree FoV. It can still shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second and offers a wealth of Google AI tricks, including Best Take, Magic Editor, and Magic Eraser. There’s also a long exposure mode, up to 5x digital zoom, and up to 8x ultra-high-resolution zoom.

There’s no reason to accuse Google of duplicating camera hardware, even if it’s the same one it released last year. The point the company is trying to make is that, at the end of the day, all you need is its algorithm. What’s offered here is the bare minimum and the performance is good enough. I captured a once-in-a-lifetime view of the Northern Lights in California using my Pixel 8a (no tripod required). I took a photo with the Pixel 8 for comparison and I couldn’t even tell the difference without zooming in.

As with the Pixel 8, don’t zoom in too much as the camera will show its limitations. At the very least, the Pixel 8a’s wide aperture will give you enough light to zoom in and scan a QR code on a wall from a distance.

Google Pixel 8a is still a good choice

Like the rest of the Pixel lineup, Google promises seven years of software, security, and feature updates. This is Android’s way of keeping you company for the long haul. As for bundled artificial intelligence features, which are now standard on the Android platform – that’s all Google is focusing on. Consider this if you’re buying a Pixel 8a to save money. It will be interesting to see if Google can maintain feature parity with other flagships.

For most people looking for a basic smartphone that can at least capture those rare glimpses of the Northern Lights, the Pixel 8a is an excellent choice, starting at $500. But if you can find a cheaper Pixel 8 and bundle it with a trade-in or sale, it’s worth it. First, the Pixel 8a currently does not offer IP68 water and dust resistance. The Pixel 8a has an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, which is no problem at least for making calls in the toilet. Try not to let it sit there too long. Second, the camera hardware of Pixel 8 is still better than that of Pixel 8a. You’ll need it if you want sharper, higher-resolution photos.
