Indian player Sumit Nagar rose 18 spots to 77th in the latest ATP rankings released on June 10, almost locking in a spot in the men’s singles draw for the Paris Olympics.

Nagal has 713 ATP points. Nagal’s rise in the rankings came as he defeated Switzerland’s Alexander Richard in three thrilling sets to claim the men’s singles crown at the 2024 Heilbronnecka Cup Challenge in Germany on Sunday.

The Indian won 6-1 6(5)-7 6-3 in the final which lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes. Rankings as of June 10 will serve as the basis for determining Olympic qualification.

According to established standards, the top 56 men and women ranked will automatically qualify for the Olympics, but no more than four people from each country can qualify for the Olympics. This rule allows lower-ranked athletes to sneak into the Olympics.

Nagal looks set to claim the last available ranking spot in the draw. The last time an Indian player qualified for the Olympics was in the 2012 Olympics when Somdev Devvarman qualified as a wild card.

“So happy to win this week in Heilbronn. It was a big week for me and I’m proud to be playing my best tennis when it matters most,” Nagal posted on X after his eventual win .

“If I win a match like this, I’ll be proud because this match is crazy. Ranking is secondary, the first goal is to play good tennis,” he said at the end of the match.

The 26-year-old Nagar will be the only Indian in the men’s singles event in Paris.

This is Nagal’s sixth ATP Challenger title and second after winning the Chennai Open on home soil earlier this year.

Nagar is currently the highest-ranked Indian singles player with four ATP Challenger titles since 2023, and Heilbronn’s win was his fourth title on clay.
