Star turtle rescued from businessman’s home

Continuing investigations into attempts to smuggle star tortoises, officers from the CID’s forest team, with the help of wildlife activists, raided three more locations, including two pet shops and a house belonging to a businessman in Koramangala. house and rescued nine more Star Turtles from them.

The scam came to light in May this year when an alert conductor on a private bus in Anand Rao Circle observed movement in a passenger’s luggage and averted an attempt to smuggle 218 endangered star tortoises.

The passenger tried to board a private bus at Anand Rao Circle for Chennai, but after the conductor inquired about his movements in the luggage, he abandoned the luggage and fled the spot.

The rescued turtle was taken to a PFA rescue center. Acting on a tip, officials on Wednesday raided two pet shops in Vidyaranyapura and Nagarabhavi, where the star tortoises originated. Acting on their information, police raided a house in Koramangala and rescued three more turtles, bought them and kept them in a pond as pets.

The accused have been booked for further investigation under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act.
