OpenAI claims its free GPT-4o model can talk, laugh, sing and see like humans

Open artificial intelligence on Monday declare GPT-4o is a new artificial intelligence model that the company says is one step closer to “more natural human-computer interaction.” The new model accepts any combination of text, audio, and images as input and can produce output in all three formats. It’s also able to recognize emotions, allowing you to interrupt it during your speech, and react during conversations almost as fast as a human.

“What’s special about GPT-4o is that it provides GPT-4 level intelligence to everyone, including our free users,” Mira Murati, chief technology officer of OpenAI, said in a live demonstration. A big step forward in terms of functionality.”

During the demo, OpenAI showed GPT-4o instantly translating between English and Italian, helping researchers solve linear equations on paper on the fly, and providing another OpenAI executive with information by listening to him breathe. Deep breathing guidance.

The “o” in GPT-4o stands for “omni” and refers to the model’s multi-modal capabilities. OpenAI says GPT-4o is trained across text, vision and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. This differs from the company’s previous models, the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, which did let users ask questions simply by speaking and then have the speech transcribed into text. This strips away tone and emotion, making the interaction slower.

OpenAI will make the new model available to everyone, including free ChatGPT users, over the next few weeks, and has also released a desktop version of ChatGPT (initially for Mac), which is available to paid users starting today.

OpenAI’s announcement comes one day before Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference. Shortly after OpenAI announced GPT-4o, Google tease A version of Gemini, its own AI chatbot, has similar capabilities.
