NASA’s year-long Mars simulation volunteers return to the real world

NASA’s Mission 1 crew— All volunteers — has left its 1,700-square-foot habitat at the Johnson Space Center. Since June 25 last year, they have conducted several simulated walks on Mars, growing vegetables and performing other tasks designed to support life and work in the environment. They also faced (simulated) stresses that actual space travelers to Mars would encounter, such as a 22-minute communication delay with Earth.

After spending 378 days in a simulated Martian habitat, four NASA volunteers on a year-long simulated stay on the red planet are about to go home. Crew members Kelly Haston, Anca Selariu, Ross Brockwell and Nathan Jones left Houston on Saturday night 3D printed habitat.

Do you think you want to live in a false space? Two more one-year missions are planned. Applications for one have closed, but a third is planned for 2026.
