NASA’s Voyager fully recovered after failure nearly ended historic mission

Voyager fans, rejoice! The 46-year-old spacecraft is once again exploring interstellar space in search of cosmic wonders after a seven-month hiatus.

The Voyager 1 was launched in 1977, so it uses old-school technology. The legendary spacecraft is exploring the outermost reaches of the solar realm, combining its observations with data from new missions to better understand the interaction of the heliosphere with interstellar space. The spacecraft has been a reliable source of cosmic data for decades, discovering new moons, active volcanoes and planetary rings.

However, late last year, the spacecraft launched Talking to the Earth with useless nonsense. FDS collects data from Voyager’s science instruments, as well as engineering data about the health of the spacecraft, and combines them into a package that is transmitted to Earth in binary code. However, when it started to malfunction, the task started sending data in a repetitive pattern of 1’s and 0’s.

To help solve this problem, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Place affected code elsewhere in FDS memory rather than repairing the damaged chip itself.

On May 19, the mission team executed the second part of the Voyager rescue mission by sending commands to the spacecraft. According to NASA, two of Voyager 1’s four science instruments immediately returned to normal operating mode, while the other two instruments required some additional work. Now, the space agency is pleased to reveal that all four instruments are returning usable science data.

Voyager 1 launches less than a month after its twin probe Voyager 2 began its own journey into space. On August 25, 2012, Voyager 1 became the first man-made object to reach interstellar space and beyond the influence of the sun. The spacecraft is currently 15.14 billion miles away, which makes its maintenance work even more impressive.
