Kerala urges Center to take measures aimed at protecting migrant workforce: Pinarayi

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday urged the Center to set up a national forum for sending large numbers of migrant workers to ensure that the host countries treat them fairly and prevent exploitation.

Mr. Vijayan, in his reply letter on the closing day of the fourth Kerala Assembly conclave, also stressed the importance of having provisions for the protection of migrant workers in free trade agreements signed by India.

Mr. Vijayan said the state government will raise both demands with the Centre. “Countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines and Mexico export the highest number of migrant workers. These countries should have a forum. Instead of competing with each other and being exploited, they should collectively demand fair treatment for their workers,” he said.

In this case, he said, the federal government must take the initiative.

Issues surrounding the protection of migrant workers have rarely been a topic in India’s agreements with other countries. Vijayan said the Indian government needs to sign agreements in this regard with major host countries.

Mr Vijayan stressed the need to strengthen ties between Kerala and the expatriate Malayalees to “preserve our language and culture”.

legal framework

The state government will consider providing legal support to the Kerala Assembly to ensure its continued existence. He said this would be done in consultation with the opposition parties.

The 2024 event was held in a somber atmosphere as expatriate Keralites from 103 countries participated in the Kuwait fire that claimed lives of Indian workers, including Keralites. LKS 2024 passed ten resolutions. Speaker of the Kerala Assembly AN Shamseer also spoke at the farewell ceremony held on Saturday.
