Google’s Project Starline video conferencing technology is coming to offices

Google is teaming up with HP to launch its Project Starline is aimed at enterprise consumers. The company first started demonstrating the service in 2021, and the first iteration involved a 3D video chat room with a projection of the person you were talking to.We walked comment on how real everything looks and how the other person seems to be in the room with you.

However, this technology is not exactly the same as what we tried a few years ago. Since then, Google has streamlined and simplified the system quite a bit. There are no more video chat rooms as the entire system has been moved to one with large televisions and video cameras. This will reduce the size but makes it easier to implement.

To this end, Google and HP will integrate Project Starline with common video conferencing applications such as Google Meet and Zoom. There’s no information yet on how much it will cost the company to use the technology, nor any details on the initial setup.Google says Later this year, actual commercialization will begin in 2025.

HP calls it an “immersive collaboration experience,” and it certainly looks like a better remote presence solution than a small smartphone screen. But at the end of the day, it’s just a big reveal. The updated Project Starline technology does not include anything resembling holographic projection.
