Following several complaints about vehicle dealers not handing over registration certificates (RCs) to registered owners at the time of delivery, the Delhi Transport Department has directed all its district offices to seek fortnightly reports on issuance of RCs from vehicle dealers within their jurisdiction . The order was issued by Transportation Minister Kailash Gahlot on Thursday.

In 2021, the Delhi government launched a facility where buyers can get the RC of a vehicle directly from dealers who have self-registration facilities.

“It has been observed that vehicle dealers with self-registration facilities do not print registration certificates and hand them over to registered owners upon delivery of vehicles. It has been observed that in some cases, the delay exceeds 30 days,” the department released an official order said.

The order also directs all District Transport Offices (DTOs) to submit fortnightly reports on the delivery date of each vehicle and its remote-controlled vehicles to every dealer under their jurisdiction and forward them to the operations department within three days.

“It is further directed to take strict action against vehicle dealers who fail to comply with instructions in this regard,” the order read.

Data shows that more than 1,800 vehicles are registered in the capital every day. In 2019-20, the number of registered motor vehicles in Delhi crossed Rs 11.8 crore and increased to Rs 122 crore in the next financial year. It will drop slightly to 7.7 million vehicles in 2021-22 and rise again to 7.9 million vehicles in 2022-23.
