Chennai Corporation schools to start French classes soon: Mayor

The Greater Chennai Corporation will start discussions with the French embassy to introduce French classes in corporate schools after the mayor and elected representatives return to Ripon House next week.

Mayors and elected representatives of the GCC will start visiting Ripon House from Monday to resume local administrative projects and welfare measures as the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections has been lifted.

“We will start French classes for students in Chennai Corporation schools. We are in talks with the French Embassy,” Mayor R. Priya said.

Measures to prevent flooding during the northeast monsoon and the resulting muddy roads will also be discussed. Since the city witnessed unusual rainfall during the southwest monsoon in June, the civic body has started working on improving rainfall preparedness. Typically, most of the rainfall in the city occurs during the northeast monsoon season.

The Chennai Corporation will also start new projects to improve infrastructure at Marina Beach and Besant Nagar Beach. Negotiations on sister-city cooperation with cities such as Vladivostok will resume in the near future. “Sister city cooperation will focus on the field of education.” Ms. Priya said.

With support from other countries, the company has launched various programs to improve education for students in its schools. Teachers from the company’s schools have visited countries such as Finland before the plan to improve smart classrooms was launched. The civic body has also launched a project to modernize schools for 1.3 lakh poor students under various schemes including CITIIS.
