70-year-old mosque collapses in Chandni Chowk, no one injured; BJP accuses mayor of ‘callousness’

A 70-year-old mosque in Chudiwalan in Chandni Chowk collapsed on Monday after multiple cracks appeared in the walls.

No one was injured as police evacuated the building.

DCP (Central) M. Harshavardhan said local sources informed the police about the cracks in the mosque and the danger to the public from the collapse of the building. As a result, a police team rushed to the spot and evacuated the mosque and three surrounding buildings.

The DCP said that around 1.55 pm, as expected, part of the building collapsed. “Police personnel have been deployed to cordon off the area around the remaining parts of the building,” he added.

Apart from the police, officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), BSES and Delhi Disaster Management Authority were also present at the site during the collapse.

According to MCD officials, the mosque collapsed due to weak foundation. He added that there was no case of road subsidence.

Delhi BJP lashed out at the MCD Commissioner, saying a special inquiry into dangerous buildings should be ordered immediately and steps should be taken to repair such buildings.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the collapse of the mosque reflected the callousness of Delhi Mayor Dr Shirley Oberoi. “Two weeks ago, I wrote to the Mayor and MCD Commissioner demanding an immediate investigation into dangerous buildings. I had warned that cracks were developing in old and dilapidated buildings during this year’s unusually hot weather, which during the monsoon season It could be fatal,” he said.
